1925 – 2014

LEWISTON — Gloria C. Fournier, 88, a resident of Jay, passed away on Sunday, May 25, at Central Maine Medical Center, with her loving family by her side.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1925, in Berlin, N.H., a daughter of Robert and Emelda (Bourassa) Hebert. She attended school in Jay. On June 9, 1944, in Farmington, she married John A. Fournier. They would have celebrated their 70th anniversary this year.

Gloria worked at the Glove Shop and Norwalk Shoe, but she found her true calling when she went to work in the cafeteria at Jay Elementary School. She loved her work and the children; there were many who called her Grammy and referred to as the “Legend of Jay Elementary School.” Gloria retired in 2013, after 30 years of devoted service.

Gloria and John enjoyed camping at Cathedral Pines in Eustis and were return campers there for the past 30 years. Gloria also enjoyed fishing and following her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was an avid Red Sox fan, but more than anything else, she enjoyed time spent with her family and the weekly Sunday dinners together, as well as birthdays, and especially cherished the times spent with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Gloria was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, John A. Fournier; daughters, Jean Foss and Denise Castonguay and her husband, George, all of Jay; seven grandchildren, Kelly and Sean Mitchell, Darren Fournier, Dana Fournier, Shawn and Diane Foss, Jayme and Heather Foss, Ryan and Kathleen Foss and Katelin Castonguay; 15 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Amber, Mykala, Brad, Nevaeh, Morgan, Mariyah, Miley, Cameron, Adelle, Connor, Sophie, Zach, Zoey and Lucas; two great-great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Wyatt; her brother, Armand Hebert and his wife, Pauline, of Corinna; sisters, Lauretta Hebert, Aurora Provencher and Helen Buote, all of Jay; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her son, John A. Fournier Jr.; brothers, Joseph, Laurier and Robert Hebert; and sisters, Mary Jane Pomerleau, Rebecca Hebert and Elizabeth L’italian.
