AUGUSTA — Mainers may soon be able to drive faster on Interstate 295.

Department of Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt will announce his decision Tuesday on whether to raise the speed limit.

Maine’s Democratic-led Legislature approved a bill last year that allows the transportation chief to raise the speed limit to 75 miles per hour. The speed limit for most of the interstate is currently 65.

The department says that it has done several extensive traffic studies on the issue.

Bernhardt will be joined Tuesday by Maine State Police Chief Col. Robert Williams.
