MEXICO — “Read: May the Books Be With You!” is the Star Wars-based theme for this year’s children’s summer reading program at the Mexico Public Library. The program will run from June 23 until Aug. 15. Sign-up will begin Monday, June 9.

The library will offer the program and reading incentives to readers ages 2-14.

Readers ages 2-5 will receive a prize for every two hours that they spend reading or looking at books with an adult.

Readers ages 6-10 will receive a prize for every three hours spent reading with an adult or by oneself.

Readers ages 11-14 will receive a prize for every five hours spent reading.

Prizes include coupons for free ice cream, pizza and kids’ meals. A variety of nonfood prizes will also be offered. Also, a “Read: May the Books Be with You!” T-shirt will be given to each participant when they redeem their first two units of reading time.

To sign up for the program, children may visit the library anytime beginning Monday, June 9. All children who sign up will receive a free book bag with theme-related items inside, a reading log, parent letter and a schedule of summer events. Ticket vouchers for a free ticket to a Portland Sea Dogs game will also be available to all summer reading participants.

Again this summer, the library will offer “Terrific Tuesdays.” Most weeks throughout the summer there will be a special free program for kids. All will be held at the Calvin Lyons Hall, next door to the library.

The following is the schedule for “Terrific Tuesdays”:

June 24 at 10 a.m.: “Stupendous Science,” interactive science program with Bitsy Ionta (Mr. I, the Science Guy).

July 1 at 10 a.m.: “Startling Snakes!” with Snake Man Rob White.

July 8 at 10 a.m.: “Jolly Juggling!” Show with Juggler Steve Corning, with how-to workshop to follow. Donations accepted.

July 15: “Conjuring Carroll” with Magician Carroll Chapman. Donations accepted.

July22: Storytelling program with “Lovely Librarians” Brenda Sassi and Michelle Ladd.

July29 at 10 a.m.: “Earthjams!” interactive music program with singer/songwriter Matt Loosigian. Donations accepted.

Aug. at 10 a.m.: “Spark’s Ark!” Animal Rescuer and Rehabilitator Josh Sparks will present a program with live animals. Donations accepted.

Aug. 12 at 10 a.m.: “Star Wars”- themed End-of-Summer-Reading Party. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Activities, celebrate summer reading accomplishments and pizza lunch.

Friday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m.: American Girl Tea Party, featuring American Girl dolls, Marie-Grace and Cecile, circa 1853. The program is for girls ages 6-12. All girls are invited to bring dolls and come in period costume. (not required). Activities will focus on American Girls Marie-Grace and Cecile, who lived in New Orleans in the 1850s.
