LEWISTON — A teenager was being treated at a Portland hospital Thursday after falling from a fourth-story apartment window on Maple Street.

Police were investigating the 2 a.m. fall, although early indications were that the fall was not suspicious.

Police believed that the teen, an 18-year-old who lives at 79 Maple St., had been sleeping shortly before he fell from the window and onto the street below.

“He was conscious and able to talk to us at the scene,” said Lewiston police Chief Michael Bussiere. “But obviously, he was in a lot of pain.”

The teen’s name was not available Thursday night. Police said it appeared he suffered head, neck and other injuries in the fall.

The teen was taken first to Central Maine Medical Center and later to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Investigators said it appeared he would survive his injuries.

At the time the teen fell out the window, his siblings were sleeping in nearby rooms, as were his parents. They were awakened shortly after the 18-year-old fell.

“His dad heard something,” Bussiere said. “He heard screaming from outside.”

The apartment house is near the corner of Maple and Blake streets.

Police and medical crews responded minutes later. Although the teen speaks English, his parents don’t speak the language well. Detectives were planning to interview the 18-year-old at the hospital and to use a translator to speak further with the parents.

The fall was the second of the year in downtown Lewiston that resulted in serious injury. In early March, Samantha “Sam” Watson, 27, fell from a third-story window at her 393 Lisbon St. apartment. Watson was taken to a Massachusetts hospital where she later died. The cause of that fall remains under investigation.
