GILFORD, N.H. — Parents of students at a New Hampshire school district who objected to an assigned book with a sexually explicit passage will now be required to approve every work of fiction used in class.
“Nineteen Minutes,” by New Hampshire author Jodi Picoult, has been part of the curriculum at Gilford High School since 2007. However, this year, the district failed to send home prior notice of assignment of the novel.
Parents, who have been able to opt out of any book for their child, now will be required to opt in as of next year.
The district says reading lists will be sent home and posted online.
