STOCKTON SPRINGS — Police have released the names of the two people who died in a weekend car crash in Stockton Springs.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office says two vehicles struck head-on on U.S. Route 1 about a mile south the Penobscot Narrows Bridge just before 5 p.m. Saturday.

Forty-four-year-old Denise Shuck, the driver of the northbound car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she was from out of state, but did not immediately release a home town or state.

A passenger in the southbound car, 65-year-old Frederick Carter, died at the hospital. Three other occupants of that vehicle were hurt. Their injuries are not considered life threatening and their names were not made public.

The crash remains under investigation and police did not say which vehicle crossed the centerline.
