FARMINGTON — The Board of Selectmen confirmed hiring a Dixfield man to serve as an officer with the Police Department.

Police Chief Jack Peck introduced Derek MacDonald to the board Tuesday during its meeting.

MacDonald, 23, is a graduate of Dirigo High School and graduated in May from Husson University, Peck said. During his time at Husson, MacDonald completed Maine Criminal Justice Academy training.

Peck learned of his time at the criminal justice academy as a tuition student from Husson, he said. The academy usually takes only three or four tuition students, he said.

Based on recommendations, Peck said he thought MacDonald would be a good fit for the department and reached out to him.

MacDonald decided he’d like to stay in the area after graduating, he told the board. He thanked them for the opportunity.

MacDonald is already working for the department.

Officer Michael Raymond recently left the department to take a position in Freeport, Peck said.
