GORHAM — A tractor-trailer transporting 9,000 gallons of kerosene flipped at the intersection of routes 114 and 112 in Gorham, the Maine Department of Transportation announced late Wednesday afternoon.
The intersection has been closed to traffic, and the department urged commuters to avoid the area around the crash entirely.
“This afternoon a Noonan and Jewett tractor-trailer loaded with an estimated 9,000 gallons of kerosene has rolled over at the intersection of routes 114 and 112 in Gorham. This is a traffic circle,” read a department statement distributed by spokesman Ted Talbot. “The truck is upside-down and leaking. An unknown quantity of kerosene has been discharged and is continuing to leak.”
Responders with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection are on site and those with other cleanup organizations are being called to the site, according to the Department of Transportation.
“Three cleanup contractors are also responding, as [are] Noonan personnel,” read Talbot’s statement, in part. “The product has flowed into a storm drain but is being contained by public works. However, there is substantial risk that the nearby stream will be impacted.”
