BETHEL — The Bethel Historical Society has scheduled an illustrated lecture from a New Hampshire museum curator about Civil War soldiers’ quilts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26 at the Moses Mason House.

Executive Director Randall Bennett said that the lecture will connect with the Historical Society’s ongoing exhibit “In the Field and on the Homefront: Bethel During the Civil War,” which kicked off in May 2013 and will run until 2015.

The lecture will be given by Pam Weeks, a quilt historian, appraiser, teacher and curator of the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Mass.

Bennett said that Weeks was discovered by a local quilting group, Cross County Quilters.

“Our local quilting group meets twice a month at the Mason House, and one of their members suggested that we contact Weeks, who lives in Durham, N.H., because her knowledge on quilts would fit in with our Civil War exhibit,” Bennett said.

During her illustrated lecture, Weeks will turn to the record book of the Ladies’ Union Aid Society of Bethel, which was written between the years of 1861 to 1863.

“We’re still in the anniversary period of recognizing the fact that it’s been 150 years since the Civil War,” Bennett said. “The fact that we get to hear things written during that era is really rewarding.”

Bennett said that the lecture was “made possible by the Society’s Florence Bickford Hastings Traditional Crafts Fund, a group that raises money for certain lectures and presentations throughout the year.
