1914 – 2014

WINTHROP — Aleta Manchester, 100, Gold Star Mother and Litchfield resident, resided at the Heritage Center since 2007. She was born in Hancock, Vt., on Feb. 8, 1914, and passed away on Monday, June 9.

Aleta was a very active, accomplished artist in both watercolors and oils. She displayed her work in hospitals, local businesses and art shows. She attended Vermont Junior College and was very active in the community, founding a senior citizens outreach program and working with local artist groups. She also played the church organ for a number of years in Vermont. She received a senior citizens award representing the Heritage Center and was invited to the State House in 2010.

Aleta was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1971; and a son, Gary, who was killed in Vietnam in 1970, and is survived by her son, Charles and wife, Elizabeth, of Litchfield; her grandson, Matt, of Bar Harbor; and her granddaughter, Heather and husband, Jim, of Norway, and their children, William and Rory.
