WHITEFIELD (AP) — Police say a 16-year-old youth has died in an all-terrain vehicle crash in Whitefield.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department says the ATV operator tried to pass a car on Howe Road at about 7 p.m. Monday, but the vehicles made contact as the ATV was trying to get back to the right side of the road.

Investigators’ told WMTW-TV (http://bit.ly/1qtUD8R ) that the ATV operator, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown as the vehicle flipped. The ATV operator was taken to Maine General in Augusta and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, who was also 16, was not injured.

No names were released.

The crash remains under investigation.
