BANGOR — An Augusta man suspected of robbing a Hallowell bank on June 23 was arrested early Wednesday afternoon in Twin Mountain, New Hampshire, according to federal authorities.
John Cecil Slater, 66, was arrested without incident by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Division and Maine State Police at about 1:10 p.m., according to FBI spokeswoman Katherine Gulotta.
Slater, a convicted felon and sex offender, was the lone suspect wanted in connection with the June 23 robbery of The Bank of Maine branch located at 14 Winthrop St., according to his FBI wanted poster.
Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason said on June 23 that the suspect walked into the bank and requested to open an account. He also said that when the person was asked for ID, he handed over a robbery note demanding an undisclosed amount of cash. He then allegedly fled the scene.
In a statement seeking information about Slater and his whereabouts, officials from the FBI said that although he was not armed at the time of the robbery, they considered him armed and dangerous.
A federal warrant for Slater’s arrest was issued on June 27 after a search warrant was executed on property associated with Slater.
Slater’s initial appearance is scheduled for Thursday at U.S. District Court in Bangor, Gulotta said.
