Rep. Paul Gilbert, D-Jay, welcomed the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association of Maine to the Hall of Flags on June 2. At the request of the association and Gilbert, the governor proclaimed June 21 as Destroyer Escort Day. Destroyer escort vessels were designed as anti-submarine vessels to provide protection from submarines, aircraft and surface vessels. They were also used to shell shores for invasions. Since 1975, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association has paid tribute to American sailors who served on the ships.
