1919 – 2014

BUCKFIELD — Mary Young, 94, of Buckfield, died Tuesday, July 8, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in Peru on Nov. 12, 1919, a daughter of John J. and Gertrude Lowe O’Connor. She grew up in a settlement known as the Irish Patch in Lewiston and her family moved to Turner when she was 10 years old. She attended schools in Turner and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1937.

Mary married James Young in 1939. She had been a homemaker all of her life. She and her husband spent their lives together on their dairy farm in Buckfield. She was instrumental in writing and publishing the history of Buckfield from 1900 to 2000.

Mary was a member of the Eastern Star and a 60-year member of the Grange. She helped start the Buckfield Historical Society and was a member of the Maine Genealogical Society, the Maine Iris Society and the Maine Old Cemetery Association. She enjoyed gardening and genealogy.

She is survived by her son, Peter, of Buckfield; her daughter, Susan, of Buckfield; a special niece, Colleen O’Connor, of Buckfield; 26 nieces and nephews; and her sister, Patricia Morrell, of Turner.

She was predeceased by her husband.
