PARIS — Police will question potential witnesses in the hit-and-run death of a Leavitt Area High School student this week.

Police Chief Michael Madden said Wednesday that police are investigating witnesses and suspects in the March death of 16-year old Xavier Fuentes of Turner.

“The investigation is ongoing. It hasn’t fallen by the wayside, but with the amount of evidence — not a lot — and not a lot of cooperation (from suspects) we’re doing the best we can given the circumstances,” Madden said.

Fuentes was struck and killed by a vehicle as he was walking home from the Flagship Cinema in Oxford on an unlit stretch of Route 117 in South Paris.

Fuentes was found lying in the westbound travel lane by a passing driver at 8:30 p.m., police said. He was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where he died.

Investigators believed he was struck by a truck or an SUV near the intersection of Brett Hill Road, a short distance west of downtown South Paris and about 4 miles from the movie theater.

Since his death, police have questioned several suspects. In May, police said they had identified two suspects from Lewiston and Auburn area.

Police executed search warrants, seizing a car in Lewiston, a car from a Hertz car rental business in Bangor and evidence at a suspect’s house in Auburn. The cars are being examined at the State Police Crime Lab in Augusta.

Madden previously said the suspects, who had not been cooperative, were being kept under surveillance.

The Portland Press Herald reported on May 20 that police subpoenaed several companies, including social media websites and cellphone providers, for information relating to the case.
