LEWISTON/RAYMOND — Jackie Bredenberg, 17, is the granddaughter of Will Bredenberg of Lewiston and Alice Bredenberg of Raymond.

In September, Jackie will start her senior year at the Detroit, Mich., Country Day School.

She has been recognized during her junior year for accomplishments in both academics and athletics. She finished first in the Michigan Math Prize contest and qualified for the USA Olympiads in math, physics and linguistics. In linguistics, Jackie scored second in all of North America and was selected to join seven others in representing the United States at the 12th International Linguistics Olympiad in Beijing, China, July 21-25.

In cross country, Jackie broke her school records and went on to finish second at the state championship meet. In track, she brook school records in 3,200 meters and 1,600 meters, finishing first in those events at regional competition.

The International Linguistics Olympiad has been held annually since 2003. The last time it was held in the U.S. was in Pittsburgh in 2011. In 2013, one gold, one silver and two bronze medals were won by USA participants. 2013 gold medalists were Alexander Wade (USA) and Anton Sokolov (Russia). Participants from 35 countries are expected to compete in Beijing this year.
