HARRISON — Scribner’s Mill will host a special event as part of its annual Back to the Past celebration: traditional, free hand-cut silhouettes.

Ruth Monsell of Artful Heirlooms, one of a few professional silhouette artists in New England, will be available to cut portraits at the mill’s celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3.

Monsell can turn out profile portraits in cut paper of babies from sittings of just a few minutes. Silhouettes can capture an amazing likeness, and are loved for their historical significance, individuality, and ease in preserving for generations.

Individual silhouettes are specially priced for the event. Advanced reservations are recommended, at a discount price of $20 each by calling 563-2921. The artist can also work from clear profile photographs of pets and loved loves not present.

Some of the other artist and exhibitors at Back to the Past include a straw broom maker, spinners, weavers, a collector of historic quilts and bee keeper Andy Zott. Barrel-making machinery will also be in operation at the historic mill on the Crooked River, and a blacksmith will demonstrate traditional smithing.

Return to the past by seeing a Stanley Steamer auto and race car in operation, watch a farrier shoeing horses and tour the collection of antique engines from the Maine Antique Power Association. Watch a team of oxen demonstrate how they used to haul logs to the mill and ride to and from the parking lot in a wagon drawn by a team of Belgian horses.

Children can make an old-time craft or dip birthday candles and make ice cream with a hand-cranked ice cream maker. A food booth will be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as musicians strum their instruments in the barnyard.

Scribner’s Mill is located on Scribner’s Mill Road in Harrison. Follow the yellow and black signs that will lead Back to the Past.
