WINTERPORT — A Warren woman suffered broken bones Saturday afternoon after she was pinned during a ‘freak accident’ in the pit area of Winterport Dragway.
The crash occurred between 3 and 3:30 p.m., according to Jim Watson, the owner of Winterport Dragway and president of the Winterport Dragway Association.
Jay Lundevall, 53, a driver from Warren, finished his races for the day and was driving his car onto a trailer attached to a truck. His girlfriend, Dale Harvey, 50, was in front of the car when the driver’s foot slipped off the brake and hit the accelerator, Watson said. The woman was pinned between the car and truck.
She was taken by a LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Watson said the woman suffered a broken wrist, several broken ribs and other injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday that no charges will be filed as a result of the accident.
Watson said the track had a great safety record.
“This was just a freak accident,” he said, pointing out that it occurred in the pit area and not on the track.
He said there will be some sort of fundraiser, not yet scheduled, to assist the woman in her medical expenses.
“We take care of our own,” he said.
