CHESTERVILLE — A local man is accused of arguing with a family member Monday and putting him in a choke hold, Franklin County Lt. David Rackliffe said Tuesday.

Deputy Andrew Morgan arrested Everard Cooper, 25, of Chesterville on a felony charge of domestic violence aggravated assault, he said.

A conviction on the charge carries up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Cooper and a relative had a disagreement. The family member went into his bedroom, and Cooper repeatedly beat on the door, Rackliffe said.

When the relative came to the door, a shouting match ensued, and Cooper fell down the stairs of the home. The family member went to escort Cooper out of the house, and Cooper put a choke hold around the relative’s neck and tried to throw him over his hip, Rackliffe said.

Cooper released the choke hold and was arrested, he said.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Nate Reid and Deputy Colt Bernhardt assisted Morgan at the scene.

Cooper is being held without bail at the Franklin County Jail in Farmington.
