1922 – 2014

RUMFORD — Geneva Helen Doucette Fowler, 92, formerly of Mexico, died Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Rumford Community Home and is now with her Heavenly Father, Lord and Savior.

She was born on Turcotte Block (now the Chicken Coop restaurant) on Bridge Street in Mexico on April 9, 1922, to the late William and Sadie (Spearrin) Doucette, and attended Mexico schools, Kimball, Abbott and Mexico High School. Born and raised in Mexico, she moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., then retired in Sebastian, Fla. In her later years, she returned to Maine and resided at the Rumford Community Home.

Geneva loved traveling, crafts and quilting, and was an avid reader. She also loved golfing, making jelly for the family and attending church, Bible study and church club meetings and luncheons. She volunteered at the Office of Aging in New York, was telephone caller to shut-ins in New York and transported the elderly to doctor visits, etc.

She enjoyed hiking, family cookouts and family gatherings. She volunteered at Shiloh Youth Ranch and Helping Hands in Florida. She loved summer theater, music (especially harmony) and poetry.

Geneva was married in Quincy, Mass., to Daniel L. Fowler, who died in Rumford on March 16, 2010.

Survivors include daughters, June Legere Duhamel and husband, Jack, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and Lesley Fowler and husband, Dan Cohen, of Waterville; a son, Daniel Cash Fowler and wife, Marie, of Mexico; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a daughter-in-law, Patty Fowler, of Roxbury.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband; son, Stephen; and brothers, Willie and Harry Sinclair and Phillip and Raymond Doucette.

She left us all with a book she had written and published in 1999 titled “And Then There Was Gene,” which included her obituary on the last page.
