BETHEL — First a rare calico lobster, and less than a week later, another surprise.

Sarah Lane and Jeremy Fredette of Bethel Bait Tackle & More found a rare blue lobster Thursday in a crate of crustaceans they bought from the Pemaquid Lobster Co-Op in Pemaquid Harbor.

The Albany Township couple found a mottled orange and black lobster on Sept. 6 among the lobsters they sell at their Bethel sporting goods store. They named it Freckles and donated it to the Maine State Aquarium.

Lane said a Sun Journal story about that find was picked up by The Associated Press and quickly went viral around the world. “Can you believe it? Fox News even picked it up and it went to Utah!” Lane said. “Freckles went viral!”

The chances of finding a calico lobster are 1 in 30 million, second-rarest only to the albino lobster, which is 1 in 100 million.

Blue lobsters are one in 2 million.

Because the Maine State Aquarium already has a blue lobster, Lane asked on her Facebook status if anyone wanted to buy it. “Make us an offer I guess, lol.”
