PARIS — Police say a Mexico man tried to sell an elderly woman’s coin collection and was charged with receiving stolen goods.
Shane Hatfield, 25, of Roxbury Road made an initial court appearance Wednesday on a Class C felony charge of receiving stolen property.
The count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to an affidavit by Mexico police Chief Roy Hodsdon, Hatfield stole a jar full of antique Kennedy half-dollars, copper pennies and silver dollars, and a safe box containing gold and silver coins from a vacant home belonging to Rosemary Taylor of Swett Avenue.
Hodsdon reported that a local shop dealing in coins and an anonymous tipster told police Hatfield had tried to sell some of the items.
Acting on a search warrant on Hatfield’s home, police found a fire safe with coins in it and a plastic jar with a red lid, matching the description of the items.
Hatfield maintained that his mother had given him the coins, Hodsdon said.
Bail was set at $500 cash.
