KENNEBUNK — Two women arriving in town for a vacation on Wednesday discovered an unwanted guest in the trunk of their rental car: a ball python.

Kennebunk Police Lt. Eric O’Brien said the women, whose names were not disclosed, had driven north from Boston to the Port Inn on Route 1 after meeting in Boston on Wednesday.

Around 9:15 p.m., upon popping the trunk of the car to retrieve luggage, the women discovered the reptile slithering in the trunk and called police, O’Brien said.

Officers arrived and were able to lure the snake into a pillowcase, and the snake spent the night at the Kennebunk police station. O’Brien was not sure which rental car company the women rented the vehicle from.

O’Brien said the snake was turned over to the Maine Warden Service on Thursday, and he said their plan was to take it to the Maine Wildlife Center in York.
