1925 – 2014

LITCHFIELD — Eldon R. Harvey, 88, a lifelong resident of Litchfield, died Thursday, Oct. 2, at his home.

He leaves behind his best friend and faithful companion, Danny Boy, his rescued cocker spaniel.

Eldon, the son of Charles and Evelyn (Smith) Harvey, was born on Oct. 25, 1925.

In September 1943, he married his sweetheart, Alma Gates of West Gardiner. They had four children, Eldon Richard “Butch” (Sally), Aloma Jean Harvey of Litchfield, Andrea Harvey Coe (John) of Alabama, and David A. Harvey (Cheryl) of Litchfield.

Eldon was a World War II veteran, serving in the Marshall Islands from 1943 to 1946, receiving the World War II Victory Medal. He worked as a heavy-duty equipment operator for Wyman Simpson Construction for several years and then as a mechanic and foreman at the State Highway Garage in Augusta. He retired after 23 years of employment with the state of Maine.

In 1978, his wife, Alma, passed away after 35 years of marriage to Eldon.

In 1988 he married Mary Bosworth. He and Mary enjoyed snowmobiling, camping and traveling. They traveled around Maine, Floriday and Alaska, seeing most of the United States.

Eldon was known for his never-ending joke-telling and impish pranks. Eldon was a 42-year member of the William R. Bold Legion Post 181 in Litchfield. In recent years, he pulled the senior citizens trailer with his restored 1957 John Deere Tractor for the Memorial Day parades. Eldon served as president and director of the Litchfield Fair for many years. This past September, he enjoyed being at the fair and announcing the cars for the Antique Car Show. He also enjoyed watching the horse-pulling, the kiddy-tractor pull and the mutton busting. He saw many of you, his friends and neighbors, at the fair and, of course, shared a joke or two with some of you. Eldon also enjoyed grooming and riding the snowmobile trails while a member and past president of the Litchfield Snowmobile Club.

Eldon was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Richard; his son, Eldon “Butch”; and his wife, Mary.

He is survived by his daughters, Aloma and Andrea; his son, David; five grandchildren, Charlene Alma Weinstein, Emily Coe Cooper, Matthew D. Harvey, Amanda Coe Oralls,and Lisa Harvey Bailey; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Surviving also are his sister, Arlene Atkins Morse of Vezie; his brothers, Malcolm Harvey and Merrill (Tutt) Harvey of Litchfield; many nieces and nephews; and some step-children and step-grandchildren.
