Ian Austin ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, and Kyle Farrar and Josh Mason both rushed for more than 100 yards, propelling Mountain Valley to a 38-14 Class C West football victory Friday night at Gray-New Gloucester.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it,” said Mountain Valley coach Steve LaPointe, whose team improved to 2-3 and already has doubled its win total from a year ago.

Farrar booted a 31-yard field goal to give the Falcons the lead for good, 10-7, in the second quarter. It triggered a run of 31 unanswered points.

In addition to a 55-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Farrar also kicked three extra points and wound up with 170 yards on the ground.

Mason chipped in 110 yards, highlighted by a 7-yard score that gave Mountain Valley a 17-7 halftime lead.

Austin hit Caleb Gauvin for a 6-yard score early in the third quarter.

The quarterback later ran one in from that same distance on fourth-and-goal, and he capped the Falcons’ scoring with a quarterback sneak.

Zack Haskell scored both touchdowns for Gray-NG (0-5). He caught a 31-yard scoring toss from Carson Hodsdon in the first quarter and ran back a kickoff 75 yards in the final minute of the third.

“Coyote Freeman and Alan Carrier had monster games inside for us defensively, and Caleb Gauvin played great at end,” LaPointe said.

Mountain Valley missed the playoffs for only the second time in school history in 2013. This win should keep that from happening again.

The Falcons finish the regular season with Leavitt at home, a trip to Freeport, and Cape Elizabeth at home.

“They’re taking eight teams (out of 10) this year, so we’ve got a shot,” LaPointe said.
