1933 – 2014

TURNER — Gordon Elroy Millett, 81, a longtime resident of Turner, passed peacefully Friday, Oct. 3, at his home.

He was born July 2, 1933, in Norway, the son of Leland and Doris (Brown) Millett.

In his early adulthood, he worked with his family in the logging industry. Gordon, known as “Gog,” was an avid athlete and letterman, succeeding in all three seasons’ sports. Upon graduating from Norway High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight engineer.

He met the love of his life and sister’s good friend, Janice Jordan of Turner, while he was stationed at Hanscom Air Force base in Massachusetts. They joined in marriage on Jan. 22, 1955, at the Turner Village Church. The couple was a “match made in heaven” to everyone who knew them. Gordon and Janice resided in Waltham, Mass., as newlyweds and returned to Maine upon completion of his patriotic service.

Gordon learned the trade of masonry from his father-in-law LeRoy and grew to be a highly respected entrepreneur and craftsman, restoring many Maine historical structures. His projects were renowned all around the state of Maine. Because of his impeccable work, he was chosen as the sole source for stonework restoration at the Gardiner Estates. His pinnacle project at the end of his career was the Maine State Museum waterwheel and logging exhibit.

Gordon served on the Board of Directors for SAD 52 during the construction of the new Leavitt Area High School in the 1960s.

He and Janice had a passion for travel and culture with many trips abroad. Gordon cherished time with his family, helping his children construct their homes, following his grandchildren’s sporting events, spending summers at their cottage on Bear Pond and winters in Bokeelia, Fla. He will be remembered as a loyal husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Gordon is survived by his brothers, Leland Millett Jr., Elwyn Millett and his wife, Nancy; sister, Evelyn Marshall and her husband, John, all of Norway; his mother-in-law, Wilma Jordan; brother-in-law, Arlen Jordan; sister-in-law Carmen Jenkins, all of Turner; his children, Karen Adams and her husband, James, of Bokeelia, Fla., and Henniker, N.H.; sons, Keith Millett and his loving companion, Manuela Swanson, of Turner; Kirt Millett of North Turner; six grandchildren, Heather Mannheim, Holly Wyatt, Shawna, Derek, Tyler and Kayla Millett; six great-grandchildren; and many close friends and neighbors.

He was predeceased by his wife, Janice Millett; his brother, Bernard Millett; and father in-law, LeRoy Jordan.
