WISCASSET (AP) — A Wiscasset road has been renamed less than two months after town officials approved calling it Redskin’s Drive, a move that drew condemnation from Native American groups.

Selectman on Tuesday approved renaming the street Micmac Drive, a change requested by residents.

The board in August approved the Redskin’s Drive name. Residents of the road said it honored Wiscasset High School graduates who attended the school when its sports teams were known as the Redskins, and was not meant to offend. The school several years ago changed its nickname to Wolverines.

The Times Record (http://bit.ly/1EykUKS ) reported that resident Sara Harvey says the new name shows “our respect to our Indian heritage which on my dad’s side of the family is Micmac.”

A Micmac tribal elder previously said he approved of the name.
