AUBURN — A Lewiston man faces a felony charge stemming from a head-on automobile crash on Route 196 last year.

An Androscoggin County grand jury returned an indictment on Wednesday against Spencer B. Emerson, 21, of 78 Winter St. on a count of causing death while license suspended or revoked. If convicted, Emerson faces punishment of up to 10 years in prison. He also was charged with operating after revocation, a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Police said Emerson was traveling west shortly before 4:30 p.m. on July 13, 2013, in his 1998 Volvo sedan when the collision occurred in front of the Gridiron Restaurant and Sports Pub.

Arlene Harris, 80, of Lisbon was traveling east on Route 196 in a 2004 Chrysler Concorde. Her passenger, Charlene McKeen, 80, of Sabattus, died from injuries she sustained in the crash.

Police conducted a lengthy investigation into the cause of the collision by questioning witnesses and examining scientific data and the vehicles.
