100 years ago, 1914
(from the “Ramblings Among the Highways & Byways of Maine” column) The bench mark from which the boundaries of lots on Lisbon street Lewiston are fixed is under the pavement between the sidewalk and the railroad track on Main street, on a line twenty-one inches east of the line of the buildings on the west side of the street. The mark corresponding was in a foundation stone in the basement of the old Maines & Bonnallie store, but was destroyed in excavating for the Cronin & Root block.

50 years ago, 1964
There’ll be television cameras on the streets of the Twin Cities Monday (the day before a visit by vice-presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey). They won’t, however, be filming any great story of a great community, or its people. The cameras will be those of WGAN-TV, Portland, as station personnel conduct on the street interviews. They’ll be in Auburn in the morning. and in Lewiston in the afternoon (near Ward Bros.).

25 years ago, 1989
A panel of classroom experts will grill potential Lewiston School Committee officials at a candidates’ forum at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at McMahon School. This election eve ritual, put on by the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, has a twist: The students will pose the questions. “I think they really do know what’s going on,” says PTO Vice President Dick Albert, who’s hoping the children will bring their experience in the classroom to the forum. “They see the big playground over at (Lake Street, Auburn), and they wonder why they don’t have one. I didn’t know McMahon doesn’t even have computers. My son told me they’d been stolen a couple of years ago, but they’d never replaced them.”
