AUBURN — A Poland man accused of stabbing his uncle was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on Wednesday on two counts of elevated aggravated assault.
Each of the charges against Phillip Audet, 29, carries a maximum punishment of 30 years in prison. He also was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and aggravated criminal mischief, all felonies.
Audet is at Cumberland County Jail awaiting trial.
Police said he stabbed his uncle, Steven Narbonne of Poland, while he was staying at Nabonne’s home at 202 Torrey Road.
Narbonne underwent surgery for knife wounds at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
According to a court-appointed lawyer, Audet claims he acted in self-defense and said security surveillance cameras would prove Audet was defending himself on the morning of July 6.
The two men had argued before Narbonne was injured, police said.
Audet had been on probation at the time of the stabbing. He had been convicted in Massachusetts for threatening a family member with a knife.
Prosecutors said Audet had a record of prior convictions, including criminal trespass, assault, violating bail and criminal mischief.
Audet, who worked sporadically for a painting contractor, was born and raised in Maine.
Narbonne walked to a neighbor’s house after suffering two stab wounds with a butcher’s knife, police said. He was unable to awaken anyone at the house. A family member arrived home at around 1:30 p.m. and found Narbonne collapsed at the residence. He was taken to the hospital, and police were called.
Audet fled the scene in Narbonne’s vehicle, but abandoned it on Interstate 95, where police pursued him into nearby woods with a K-9 unit and eventually captured him.
