RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the auditorium of the Rumford Town Hall, Congress Street.

The evening’s performer and speaker will be Ross Swain. He will present a program of music titled “Scott Joplin’s Ragtime Garden.”

Swain is currently residing in East Andover. However, he is well known to Rumford residents, having grown up in the area. He developed his piano skills under the tutelage of local piano teachers, including Arthur Beaudet, Madge Burke of Mexico and Bates College’s Frank Glazer.

One style of music that Swain particularly enjoys sharing is the classic piano ragtime music of Scott Joplin. He will perform some of Joplin’s music with flowers or trees in their titles, such as “Maple Leaf Rag” and “Heliotrope Bouquet.”

A brief business meeting, chaired by the new president, Randall Smith, will precede the performance, and light refreshments will be provided to end the evening.

All members and guests are asked to enter and exit the building through the River Street entrance, at the Police Department door.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend. New members are always welcome to join the Rumford Historical Society.
