DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for a book that was put together shortly after World War II by two ladies.

It was a record of servicemen who had given their lives in the war. These obituaries were taken from the Daily Sun and Evening Journal and the Messenger.

I had one but misplaced it. I will pay a reasonable price. Thank you. — Leo Savard, Lewiston, 207-784-2936

ANSWER: Tough to find a book without knowing the title or authors, but perhaps someone will remember it.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Artios Books is looking for someone with information about Etta Mears. A couple of antique photo albums have come into the store, and we would really like to return them to someone who is either related or a friend of the family.

The pictures were taken approximately around 1880 and Etta is 4 years and 10 months old. There are about 100 black-and-white pictures total. — Tracy Hall, books4ever7@yahoo.com, 180 Turner St., Auburn, 207-786-4007

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for a place in the Lewiston-Auburn area that develops rolls of film. Thank you. — Henry, Auburn

ANSWER: Some drugstores still take film for developing, but they send it out. The only place that Sun Spots knows of that does it in-house is Photo Finish in the Auburn Mall, 550 Center St., Auburn, 207-783-3354.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to Valerie, who was looking for a vendor from the Yarmouth clam festival with troughs set up to paint your own silk scarf (Oct. 3).

Shibumi Silks, which is on both Etsy and Facebook, was at the clam festival. Contact information is Patricia’s Favorite Things, 66 West Ridgeland Road, Wallingford, CT 06492, 203-269-6623, patriciasfavorite@gmail.com. — Sally, Greene

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Several years ago a very nice lady gave us a piano so that our granddaughter could take lessons.

She is no longer interested in playing it, so I would like to pay it forward by either donating the piano to an organization or giving it to a child who may want to learn to play.

ANSWER: How very nice of you! Sun Spots predicts plenty of calls.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wish the schoolteachers would teach the schoolchildren how to write good.

One year recently there were three people in my family who graduated from high school. I sent a check to each one. I received a thank-you note from one of them. I did not know who it was because I could not read their writing.

It’s really sad when people don’t write so you can read it. — No Name, No Town

ANSWER: When Sun Spots was typing up your letter, she thought she heard a collective gasp from all the English teachers, copy editors and grammar mavens who read the column who would surely point out that you teach schoolchildren how to write well, not good.

As for handwriting, Sun Spots gets letters from all ages, including those who had handwriting classes, and she has come to the conclusion that training does not guarantee results. Some people, including Sun Spots, just don’t seem to have whatever skill is required for beautiful script. (To this day, Sun Spots prints.)

Handwriting also requires lots of practice, something many people get very little of these days, what with computers and smartphones.

Perhaps your bigger problem is that the other two graduates didn’t send a thank-you note at all. If they had, you could have used the process of elimination to identify the writers!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am in the fifth grade in California. My teacher, Mrs. Andrus, is helping my class do research on one state in the United States, and I chose Maine.

There is a lot of information available on the Internet and in our library, but my teacher tells us that we will learn more by asking some of the kind people who live there. I was hoping you could ask you readers to help.

Letters, information, artifacts and other items will be appreciated. I really appreciate that you took the time to read my letter.

When I am not in school, I like to play with my baby brother, Jose, and do arts and crafts. — Lizbet Becerra c/o Joy Andrus, B. Gale Wilson Elementary School, 3301 Cherry Hills Court, Fairfield, CA 94534
