PORTLAND (AP) — President Barack Obama is planning to swing through Maine this week to campaign for Democratic governor hopeful Mike Michaud.

Obama is headlining a rally for Michaud on Oct. 30 at the Portland Exposition Building.

Democrats are hoping that Obama’s visit to Maine just days before the Nov. 4 election will excite Democratic voters and encourage them to get to the polls. First Lady Michelle Obama and Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have also stopped in Maine this month for Michaud.

Michaud is in a tight race with Republican Gov. Paul LePage and independent Eliot Cutler. Polls show LePage and Michaud neck and neck, with Cutler trailing in third.

Obama and Michaud will be joined Thursday evening by former Maine Sen. George Mitchell.
