Would you support expanding the state’s Medicaid program, MaineCare? Why or why not?

No. Adding additional able-bodied adults to the welfare rolls is not empowering them to better themselves, it will merely trap them into a system of further dependency.

Should Maine follow the city of Portland’s lead and legalize the possession of limited amounts of marijuana for adults over the age of 21? Why or why not?

Frankly, the amount of resources we spend prohibiting marijuana is obscene and not a good use of taxpayer dollars. I understand first-hand as a county commissioner of the cost of incarceration, prosecution and law enforcement and believe the costs far outweigh the benefits. Legalize and properly regulate it.

Should the state of Maine continue to provide incentives for businesses and homeowners to convert or diversify energy sources to those considered renewable, like solar, wind and geothermal?

I am not convinced we are using taxpayer funds effectively with these incentives. I would support further research and development with wind and hydro, with very limited taxpayer-direct incentives. We need to lower overall energy costs to stimulate further job growth and make it affordable to live in Maine.

Maine’s minimum wage is $7.50 an hour. As a state lawmaker would you support increasing that minimum wage? If so, what should Maine’s minimum wage be?

No. We need an entry level and high school-type wage, and that is the purpose of a minimum wage. Without that businesses would not be able to expand and provide a livable wage for more skilled workers.

What issue is the most important to voters in your legislative district?

In talking with residents of my district, I have heard their concerns clearly. Taxes are too high and they are sick of the welfare abuse. I will work to reform welfare and ensure that it is available for those who truly need it. Support increased fraud investigation at DHHS.

Proven leadership, proven results. With more than 20 years of town and county government experience, and with your support, I will bring those experiences to Augusta and restore common sense to our legislative process. I will work hard and ensure your hard-earned tax dollars are accounted for.

I do support expanding the state’s Medicaid program. Currently we are leaving money on the table when it comes to helping Mainers gain access to affordable, quality health care.

I believe Maine should begin to look at the benefits of legalizing small amounts of marijuana. It would significantly decrease the strain on our court system and jails as well as provide a revenue stream through proper taxation.

Yes. Maine is still rebounding from the recent recession and many businesses and homeowners are seeing their energy costs rise while their incomes do not. Maine should be looking at ways to generate its own energy and create jobs in the renewable sector.

There hasn’t been an increase in the minimum wage in 5 years, while families expenses keep rising. Increasing the minimum would put much-needed money into families’ pockets where they will then spend it in our communities. Everyone deserves to earn a living wage.

What issue is the most important to voters in your legislative district?

Most everyone in my district is worried about economic security; whether it’s their own job, jobs for their children, affording their retirement, paying for fuel, or just plain getting by.

What about you makes you the man or woman for the job?

I know what it’s like to try and make a life in our community. And I’m willing to put the time and energy into creating policy that will allow people to live and work in our rural community.
