LEWISTON — A team from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency on Tuesday investigated a suspected methamphetamine lab at a home at 212 Pond Road.
Mark Theriault, 45, and Ethel Hallock, 51, were arrested and charged with Class B trafficking of a Schedule W drug. Both were being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on $5,000 cash bail, MDEA Commander Peter Arno said.
It was the 23rd time this year MDEA personnel have found a suspected lab, which is an all-time record, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The incident began at 8 p.m. Monday when the MDEA executed a search warrant at the home, Arno said. After discovering evidence of a lab, agents evacuated the building to evaluate the possible danger of fire and unsafe fumes.
Theriault and Hallock live in a first-floor apartment. In all, agents found seven people in the building, including three children younger than 14.
By noon Tuesday, Lewiston police and fire personnel, the Maine Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory, MDEA and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency were involved in the case.
Men in chemical suits had spread materials on a table and on the ground behind the house. The place was surrounded by police tape, setting it apart from the cluster of modest residential homes on the busy street.
Arno declined to describe exactly what evidence was found in the home or the specifics of the case against Hallock and Theriault.
He said home-based labs are typically created to support the makers’ drug habit and might also include some sale of the drug.
