TURNER — “Music for Mavis” Tuesdays at the Gazebo has finished its fifth successful summer at the gazebo in Turner Center. The season offered 17 performances by talented musicians with varied styles to an audience of 60 to more than 100 music lovers.
Mavis Varney and her husband Paul loved their community. They gave untold hours of labor and financial contributions to town projects. The gazebo was Mavis’ dream and her vision was developed as a memorial to her. She would be proud of her daughter, Paula Anderson, and the dedicated group who work to complete the structure and find quality entertainment.
Programming for summer concerts is supported by private donations. Only twice this season were musicians’ costs totally covered by “passing the hat.” Believing that music brings joy to everyone’s life, a permanent fund is being established to ensure programming that will excite all age groups for years to come.
North Turner native Walter Kilbreth and his wife Jan donated $1,000 to support the gazebo fund and Walter challenged individuals and businesses to step up and match or exceed his offering in support of this cultural endeavor.
All who accept this challenge can add their gift to the “Music for Mavis” savings account at Androscoggin Savings Bank, 207 Auburn Road (Route 4), Turner, Maine 04282.
Community input sought
The inspiration for the gazebo came from Mavis Leavitt-Varney, who was a musician and music lover. She loved to sing harmony. The community got behind the idea and made it happen.
First, the Gazebo Committee was formed, with great help from Clint Boothby and many others, and formed the nonprofit “Music for Mavis.”
The committee needs your help, your ideas, desires, inspirations, and expertise, people who know how to write grants and what grants to apply for to support its work.
The committee would also like suggestions on what music people liked, and new suggestions for the next season.
