LEWISTON — Twelve tenants from three apartments at 61 Howard St. were relocated Thursday after fire drove them from the apartment building.
Fire investigator Paul Ouellette said the fire started in the kitchen area of a third-floor apartment at the end of the building. The cause of the fire was undetermined and would continue to be investigated, he said.
The blaze caused substantial damage to that apartment. Water from fire hoses rendered the apartments immediately below on the first and second floors uninhabitable, because, in part, of concerns about electrical wiring, Ouellette said.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross found rooms for the displaced tenants Thursday night.
