NEWRY — Selectmen are expected to hear Monday from fire Chief Bruce Pierce on what recourse the town has for homeowners who do not have address numbers on their houses.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, in the Town Office.

Deputy Town Clerk Kelly Scott said Thursday that the town tried to get compliance from homeowners by including a note with tax bills, telling them to put the Emergency 911 address numbers on their houses.

Scott said a fire alarm triggered Pierce’s request for the issue to be put on Monday’s agenda.

The Fire Department “had a fire alarm go off and firefighters happened to be on a road and none of the houses had any numbers on them,” she said. “These houses aren’t people’s primary homes, so they’re probably not thinking about that.”

Unfinished business items on the agenda include:

* Continued work to create a job description for the code enforcement officer and licensed plumbing inspector.

* An update on maintenance at Bear River Grange Hall. At the board’s previous meeting, selectmen approved buying a new furnace but it has yet to be installed, Scott said.

* Code Enforcement Officer Dave Bonney will update the board about completed and ongoing roadwork.

* An update on the Tri-Town Transfer Station and Solid Waste Board. It is comprised of Newry, Bethel and Hanover. Scott said discussions are underway on how to reduce costs, such as creating an agreement to switch to single-stream recycling. Recyclables would all go in one hopper and sorted elsewhere.

* Ongoing work to create a cemetery committee.

Selectmen are scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Town Office.
