NEWPORT, Vt. — A Maine fugitive who had been on the run for 33 years after escaping from the Aroostook County Jail is headed home after being captured in Vermont.

Vermont State Police troopers arrested 56-year-old Albert Marcheterre on Nov. 2. He had been living in Craftsbury.

Court documents say Marcheterre was arrested on a felony burglary charge in Maine the fall of 1980, but he escaped from the Houlton jail in April 1981 after hiding in the exercise yard when other inmates went inside.

The Caledonian Record reports the arrest warrant issued for Marcheterre in 1981 misspelled his name, which helped him evade capture.

Marcheterre appeared in a Vermont court Tuesday, where he agreed to return to Maine.
