OXFORD — Police were searching Wednesday for a 37-year-old man who started drinking alcohol at Wal-Mart and assaulted a witness who reported him to the store manager.

The suspect is Richard Grant, described as 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighing 155 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. He has a tattoo in the shape of a circle around his neck. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is encouraged to call the Oxford Police Department at 539-4414.

Police received a report of an assault at Wal-Mart at 1240 Main St. at about 9 p.m. Monday, Oxford police Lt. Michael Ward said. Witnesses said Grant, who appeared intoxicated, opened an alcoholic beverage he had not paid for and began to drink it, the officer said.

Two people reported the incident to a store manager. During their conversation, the man left the store, and as the witnesses left he assaulted one outside, Ward said. No one was injured, the lieutenant said.

Shortly after the incident, Grant drove south on Route 26 in a car registered to a Casco woman. She was not involved in the assault and is cooperating with police, Ward said.
