DEAR SUN SPOTS: My question/problem is that a campaign sign for “Roy for county commissioner” still remains up under the power lines on Old Webster Road in Lewiston. Is there someone who can get rid of it since the election is over?

I was under the impression that the candidates, win or lose, were to take care of this. Forgive me if this not something you can help with. Thank you. — Scott Eustis in Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots can help, although she won’t go take down the sign personally!

According to the candidate’s election guide at maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/2014/guide14.pdf, signs must be removed no later than one week after the election, primary or referendum. Perhaps it was just overlooked? According to the election results, Matthew P. Roy won his race.

Someone who knows Roy will probably see this in the column and let him know, but if not a call to the County Commission asking them to let Roy know might do the trick. The number is 207-753-2500.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am a hairdresser for Clover Manor Nursing Home. I was wondering if any local salons would consider donating hairdo magazines they now throw away or recycle. Some of the ladies would sure enjoy looking at them.

ANSWER: Sun Spots did not think that the Shepody potatoes the reader sought are fingerlings, so she looked up fingerlings on Wikipedia, which says:

“A fingerling potato is a small, stubby, finger-shaped type of potato which may be any heritage potato cultivars. Fingerlings are varieties that naturally grow small and narrow. They are fully mature when harvested and are not to be confused with new potatoes.

“Popular fingerling potatoes include the yellow-skinned Russian banana, the orange-skinned French, and the purple Peruvian. Due to their size and greater expense compared to other potatoes, fingerlings are commonly either halved and roasted as a side dish or used in salads.”

Shepody potatoes are primarily grown for french fries, so they are long and large, not small like fingerlings. Or at least so Sun Spots thinks. Readers, prove her wrong!
