PORTLAND (AP) — Officials and environmentalists are postponing an event about eliminating cigarette butt litter in Portland, due to heavy ice in the city.

A city spokeswoman says about five dozen “Sidewalk Buttler” cigarette dispensers were recently installed around the city. The tubular receptacles resemble mustachioed butlers and have mouth-shaped inserts where smokers can dispose of cigarette butts.

City officials, business owners and a representative from the Natural Resources Council of Maine will gather in Monument Square at noon on Thursday to demonstrate how the butlers work. They event had been scheduled for Portland City Hall on Wednesday. The council says the butlers are “a sensible, easy way Portland is tackling cigarette butt litter.”
