FARMINGTON — The Recreation Department is preparing for the 35th season of Junior Pro Basketball.

Registrations will be taken until Dec. 11 at the department’s office in the Farmington Community Center. The office will be open until 6 p.m. Dec. 11.

Girls and boys in grades three through six are eligible for this instructional program. Players are separated into two teams with boys and girls playing on the same team to promote balanced competition and equal play opportunities.

Junior Pro is an in-house program. Participants do not play on travel teams or interscholastic programs. All games and practices take place in Bjorn Gymnasium at the Farmington Community Center.

The program begins with preseason introductory skills clinics Dec. 13 and 20. No Junior Pro takes place Dec. 27.

Regular season games begin Jan. 3 and are held Saturdays. Grades four, five and six will play at 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Grades two and three will play at 12:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m.

The program ends with championship games planned Feb. 11.

Kim Richards is the director of the program. This is her 23rd year in that position.

A standard registration fee of $25 is charged to all players. A nonresident fee of $5 also is charged to participants who do not reside in Farmington, Farmington Falls, West Farmington or Fairbanks.

First-year players may also purchase a youth sports team jersey during registration. These are used for basketball and soccer programs and cost $25.

A scholarship in memory of the 1990 boys’ basketball travel team coach Alex Strozier will be continued this season. Two dollars from every Junior Pro registration fee will be given to the fund. The sum, anticipated to be about $150, will be awarded to a deserving volunteer coach in this program.

For more information about the program, contact the Farmington Recreation Department at 778-3464 or 778-3444, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No registrations will be accepted by phone.
