LEWISTON — Police found the body of 26-year-old Dustin Hadfield on Thursday morning. The Air Force veteran from Lewiston had been missing since Saturday night and appears to have died from a self-inflicted wound.

According to Lt. Michael McGonagle, police had been searching for Hadfield since Sunday and found his body Thursday at Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, about 50 feet from the Montello Street parking lot.

Police had walked the sanctuary earlier in the week, McGonagle said, and didn’t find Hadfield. Officers went back for a second pass after the week’s rain cleared the snow cover, and Hadfield’s body was found within minutes of the start of the search.

Police said it appeared the body had been there since the night Hadfield was reported missing.

Earlier this week, Hadfield’s brother, Adam Hadfield of New Mexico, told the Sun Journal that Dustin had been at a party with friends on Wood Street on Saturday night before texting a friend around 2 a.m. and vanishing, leaving behind his debit card and vehicle, and turning off his cellphone.

Adam Hadfield said his brother, who served six years in the Air Force, had been planning to move to New Mexico next month.

According to McGonagle, Hadfield appeared to have walked to the sanctuary.

His death was not considered suspicious, but police were continuing their investigation.

Hadfield had been employed at Radio Shack at Cook’s Corner in Brunswick. Employees of that store joined in the search for him earlier this week.
