As much as I hated to embarrass my dogs by having to put on their orange safety vests over the last month of hunting, I really enjoyed seeing everyone harvest their deer and bear. It’s nice to know the population is being controlled and our wildlife are living healthily.

Throughout the month, I saw fathers out with their daughters and sons, some for the first time. Way to go dads! I love knowing that the hunting tradition is being introduced to so many young boys and girls.

And, as nice as it was to see a couple of younger kids get their deer this year, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Bodemer family’s photo of their harvest.

Dennis and his sons, Logan and Coleman, formerly of Andover, now live in Rockwood and all three tagged out this season. Coleman, with his first ever deer.

Dennis’ harvest was an 8-pt. 150-lb. buck, while Logan walked away with an impressive 8-pt. 198-lb. buck, and Coleman shot a 3-pt. 130-lb. You can be sure their freezer is going to be stocked for the winter months.
Congratulations to all three of them on their successful season.

Now, since the days are getting cooler and ice is forming on the lakes, ponds and rivers, let’s remind one another of the safety factor. Plainly put, our bodies of water are NOT safe to travel on.

Please, before you decide to cross a body of water with your new snowmobile that you’ve been itching to get out, think of all those rescue workers who would have to risk their lives if you were to go through the ice.

Think before you act, people. Be safe, responsible and wait for the ice to thicken before venturing out.
