Mt. Blue 44, Messalonskee 30

OAKLAND — The Mt. Blue girls’ basketball team finally got its first game of the season played Friday, and the Cougars’ defense helped produce a 44-30 KVAC win over Messalonskee.

Mt. Blue had a bye the first night of the season and then had Tuesday’s game with Skowhegan snowed out. The Cougars got 12 points each from Eryn Doiron and Caitlin Kane, while Addie Brinkman had eight points and four blocks.

Messalonskee (2-1) got nine from Sophia Holmes and eight from Allyssa Turner.

It was a close battle for much of the game. After an 8-7 Mt. Blue lead in the first quarter, the Cougars were up 17-13 at the half. Mt. Blue opened a 35-26 lead in the third quarter and then held the Eagles to just four points in the final quarter.

Leavitt 38, Nokomis 34

TURNER — The Leavitt girls’ basketball outlasted Nokomis 38-34 Friday night in a close KVAC B game.

The Hornets were up 21-8 at the half. After the teams tied 9-9 in the third quarter, the Hornets preserved the lead, outscoring the Warriors 8-7 in the fourth.

Freshman guard Elizabeth Goulette led the Hornets (2-1) with 15 points while Allie Belaire added 10. Chantel Eells had seven. Nokomis (1-2) got 15 from Sidney Moore and 12 from Mikayla Charters.

Sophia Gilbert led the Hornets with 10 rebounds, while Eells yanked down seven. Goulette also had seven steals and four assists, and Eells added six blocks.

Mountain Valley 50, Wiscasset 40

WISCASSET — Mountain Valley held Wiscasset to 10 points in the first half as the Falcons earned a season-opening 50-40 MVC win.

Liza White led Mountain Valley (1-0) with 15 points while Ashley Russell had 14 points and eight rebounds. Sydney Petrie added nine for the Falcons.

Wiscasset (1-1) got 16 from Alecia Faulkingham and seven from Kayla Gordon.

The Falcons held Wiscasset to just five points in each of the first two quarters and built an 18-10 halftime lead. Though Wiscasset stayed close in the second half, the early lead held up. Wiscasset finished just 5-for-14 from the line while the Falcons were 9-for-17.

Dirigo 70, Telstar 21

BETHEL — After jumping out to a healthy 24-point lead in the first quarter, Dirigo sped away to post a 70-21 vicrtory over Telstar in MVC girls’ basketball Friday. 

Kelsey Hutchins led the Cougars (2-0) with 20 points, while Lauren Henderson tallied 19 and Jessica Conant added 15. 

Becca Howard and Blair Stevens paced the Rebels (0-3) with six points apiece. 

Rangeley 78, North Haven 11

NORTH HAVEN — Rangeley raced away to post a 78-11 rout over North Haven in EWC girls’ basketball action Friday. 

Seve Deery-DeRaps led the Lakers (2-0) with 19 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Natasha Haley chipped in with 17 points, while Maddi Egan added 13.  Jasmine Brown led the way for North Haven with seven points. 

Skowhegan 44, Lewiston 38

LEWISTON — Skowhegan used a strong second quarter to open a lead and hed off Lewiston, 44-38, in KVAC girls’ basketball Friday night.

Tracey Swanson led Skowhegan (1-1) with 13 points. Andrea Gurney tallied 10. Kristina Blais paced the Blue Devils (1-2) with 13 points, Victoria Harris dropped in nine points and Alasia Branche had seven.

Poland 40, Yarmouth 28

POLAND — Nathalie Theriault poured in a game-high 15 points and Poland defeated Yarmouth, 40-28, on Friday night.

The Knights (3-0) started slowly, scoring just five points in the first quarter before netting 15 in the second to grab a 20-16 lead at halftime. They pushed their lead to 11 after three.

Michaella Arsenault joined Theriault in double figures with 11 points. Sara D’Appolonia led the Clippers (1-1) with seven points.

Gray-New Gloucester 64, Cape Elizabeth 46

CAPE ELIZABETH — Skye Conley and Zoe Adams each recorded double-doubles for Gray-New Gloucester, who defeated Cape Elizabeth, 64-46, on Friday night to remain undefeated.

Conley scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, and Adams added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Grace Kariotis finished with a team-high 15 points, all four of her field goals coming from behind the arc.

The Patriots (3-0) led 21-4 after one quarter and 32-23 at halftime. Maddie Bowe led all scorers with 16 points for the Capers (1-1). Montana Braxton also finished in double figures for Cape, adding 13.
