VIENNA — A man and woman escaped a fire Sunday that destroyed an old farm house at 11 Vienna Mountain Road, fire Chief Brian Church said Monday.
No one was injured.
Firefighters were called out at 10 p.m.
Church, who lives nearby, said as soon as he got out the door and saw the blaze, he knew the cape-style house would be lost.
“It was fully involved,” he said.
Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to a house approximately 30 to 40 feet away, he said.
John Lehr and a woman whose identity was unknown Monday morning, got out of the house safely, but they lost everything, Church said.
A family member reported the fire.
The fire started around the wood stove, he said.
Church consulted with state fire investigators on the cause. They did not respond to the scene.
The family had no insurance, he said.
Firefighters dug through the rubble early Monday to make sure the fire was out.
They were at the site until approximately 2:15 a.m.
No smoke rose from the debris at 8:45 Monday morning.
About 40 firefighters from Vienna, Fayette, Mt. Vernon, Wayne, Readfield and Manchester responded. Firefighters set up a water line to draw water from Mill Pond, located approximately 1,000 feet away.
Lehr and the woman went with his son. Church’s wife was trying to locate them Monday morning.
