AUGUSTA (AP) — A former disability claims examiner for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has been sentenced to almost two years in prison for illegally collecting state welfare benefits.
Crystal Hodsdon, of Winthrop, was sentenced Monday to one year and nine months behind bars and was also ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution.
The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1uSIjPX) reported that the 33-year-old Hodsdon was allowed to remain free on bail pending her appeal.
She was convicted in October of one count of theft by deception.
Prosecutors say from May 1, 2009, through April 30, 2013, she received benefits through the MaineCare program by lying about the amount of time her children lived with her.
Her lawyer pointed out that she has no prior criminal record.
