This afternoon exploring the seas will include favorites from the popular films “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “The Little Mermaid.” Audiences will also visit the European coast with the classical work “The Hebrides Overture” by Mendelssohn and experience the ocean’s perilous side with John Williams’ “Theme from Jaws.” Get the whole family excited for the performance with the concert playlist compiled by PSO, available on their website.

Discovery Concerts were created to give families an opportunity to enjoy the music of the full orchestra in a family-friendly setting. The hour-long performances are engaging and educational, offering audiences an opportunity to engage and explore the musical world of the PSO. The “Pirates and Mermaids” Discovery Concert will be led by PSO Assistant Conductor and Community Liaison Norman Huynh.

The Portland Ballet’s CORPS program gives young dancers the chance to pursue an interest in ballet through advanced training built around their academic careers. The pre-professional dancers attend classes at Portland High School in addition to three hours of Portland School of Ballet classes each day, and opportunities to perform within the community help them to build their knowledge of and share their passion for ballet.

Audiences are encouraged to come from 1-1:30 p.m. for a quick lesson on conducting an orchestra, a hands-on instrument petting zoo, and musical fun for the whole family.

All tickets are $10 and are available at 207-842-0800 or www.porttix.com. Tickets may also be purchased at 20 Myrtle St., Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.

The final Discovery Concert of the 14-15 season, “Seuss at the Symphony,” will be Sunday, May 3.
