RUMFORD — The Mahoosuc Land Trust invites all in the area to welcome in the new year on a gentle snowshoe exploration of the Ellis River beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3. The hike will explore the stretch of riverfront along the Ellis River owned by the deFrees family.

Local naturalists will be along to help identify animal tracks and spot winter birds. Those with sharp eyes may spot river otters sliding into the water. The walk will be topped off with a bonfire with hot dogs and marshmallows for roasting.

The walk will begin 1/8 of a mile beyond the parking lot for the Whitecap trail: Take Route 5 north from Route 2 for 3 miles. Turn right to cross the first bridge, then left onto the East Andover Road. The parking lot is 200 yards on left. Parking will be available beside the road and limited parking at 92 East Andover Road (brown house).
